Channel 5 plans to cancel Big Brother UK, unless a reduced deal can be reached on the series.
Ben Frow, broadcaster’s head of programming, asserts that the reality show will not return “in its current form” as its contract expires this year, per Broadcast.
Frow says Big Brother‘s salvation is in the hands of producer Endemol Shine:
Frow confirmed that the broadcaster will “not be spending the same amount of money” on the format and said: “The ball is in Endemol Shine’s court”.
C5 currently airs three series of Big Brother a year – one civilian series and two celebrity ones – which occupy 110 primetime hours of its schedule.
One possible outcome is for C5 to commission a reduced order of the format – potentially scaling back the hours to air just the celebrity versions or a shortened run of the civilian series.
Big Brother UK‘s current deal expires this year, with one series of Big Brother and one of Celebrity Big Brother set for summer 2018.
Should Big Brother UK be cancelled, or does it have more life beyond 2018? Stay tuned for the final verdict…
