Wayward Pines Cancelled By FOX – No Season 2

July 17, 2015 by RenewCancelTV 40 Comments

wayward pines cancelled

UPDATE II: December 9, 2015 – Having cancelled Wayward Pines last summer (without fully closing the door on Season 2), FOX has officially renewed the mystery series for a second season, to premiere summer 2016.

UPDATE: August 6, 2015 – Despite cancellingย Wayward Pines just three weeks ago, Fox say they’reย in discussions toย potentially bring the limited seriesย back forย Season 2. Stay tuned for any developments – original story continues below.

—

FOX hasย announced the cancellation of Wayward Pines after promoting next week’s “season” finale as the “series” finale in its latest promo.

Wayward Pinesย was conceived as a limited/event series (not miniseries) that could end after one season or continue into Season 2 if the ratings were good enough.

Therefore, while the first season tells a complete story, there wereย plans in place for a second season which would have followed a new self-contained story.

However, the cancellationย confirms that the network will not be going ahead with those plans forย Wayward Pines Season 2,ย thoughย the self-contained format the of the season means that there will at least be closure, with a nod to what a second season would have been.

Check out the series finale promo below as Wayward Pines preparesย forย the cancellation graveyard:

RIP.

Really???? For the first time a good serie to see after “Dexter” and you end it like that?
With all the suspense and marketing all around it and you leave us like this?
At least there should had, had 2 or even 3 more episodes or at least another season
      FABULASTIC!!!

I guess I’ve learned a lesson to not watch first seasons of series on fox when they just cancel great shows presumably before they’ve had a chance to find their audience. Better promotion would have helped people find this show and given it the 2nd season it should have. I agree that the cw (or just about any other network) is a better place to get into new series.

Wayward Pines was always only planned as a “limited 10 episode series”. It was based off of 3 short books. They do not have material to continue further “seasons”. The 10 episodes were a hit, but that is all of the story they have to tell.

Jeremy, Wayward Pines was a limited series with a possibility of Season 2. A second season would have followed a new story with new characters, completely going beyond the book.

FOX considered renewal but ultimately ratings weren’t quite good enough.

Not true. Yes it was off the 3 books. The writers of the show were commented saying there are so many directions to take the show after this 10 part series. So they did hope on doing another season. You can google the info very easily. Just because the book ended doesn’t mean someone cannot pick it up and go past it. Look on amazon. They have amazon world which allows people to take a book and go deeper into the characters. There are at least 15 smaller books that are based on wayward pines and I have read many of them. They are actually very good. Check out amazon world it opens all kinds of series up. It gives new ideas to things. To say there were 3 books and that is it. Writers are here to come up with stories. Just because the author stopped does not mean the story ends. They did this as a trial to see if it would end or if they could go further. The network has made a big error. I do hope someone else picks it up, but from what I have seen no one seems to be picking up good shows and moving them to another channel. People do not take chances anymore. Its really ashame.

Guys it wasn’t cancelled. It’s a limited series! They put all 3 books in 10 episodes; of course the last one is the “series finale”. Why would you expect something else?

Katherine it was actually cancelled. “Limited series” doesn’t preclude subsequent seasons, it simply refers to the ‘limited’ number of episodes per season (usually 6-13).

A second season was in discussion and would have centered on a new story in the Wayward Pines universe.

      https://www.renewcanceltv.com/wayward-pines-season-2-renewed-discussions-revealed/

That being said, the format of the series means there will at least be closure to the story we’ve been watching this season.

Limited series are done not to actually end after 1 season. They do this so that if it does not get another season it doesn’t look like it was cancelled. It is a safety word so that bigger writers and actors will work on the show. Yes they plan on having this come to an end in 1 season, but I know this show has so much potential for future seasons. I do not understand why Fox takes on a syfy show, but then bails. And even though people think they should move the show to the syfy channel. That channel is not the same as the original sci fi channel. They cancel good shows too. Wayward Pines is an Awesome show and even if they do the ending like the book, there is so much more they can do with this show. I cannot believe its cancelled. The networks need to realized that some people will not watch a show right away because they do not want to be invested in something that is cancelled. Also limited series if it went against another show they were watching would someone who doesn’t have dvr not watch there regular show for 1 that says its limited even if its good. They figure they can watch it later online, or reruns. The networks do not account for all the ways people watch shows now of days. I am sure the ratings for this show were much higher than they post. I have also read from the writers of the show. They did want another season. So people continuing to say its a limited series get over yourselves. The same thing happened with the show Extant it was a limited summer show, but they are now doing a second season. Same thing happened with Ascension. They did 4 shows to see how it would go. They did it in 1 week. They didn’t rerun it so that people who are faithful to other shows could watch it and love it. Had they done reruns that weekend or the next they would have scene it was a good show worth going to a full series, but they looked at it like they advertised it for how long it should have had higher ratings. TV is not the same as the old days people watching the shows the first time they come on. The ratings systems need to be fixed and the idiots cancelling the shows should be fired for not thinking further down the line.

Why doesnt the SYFY channel pick this show up for a 2nd season?? This show would be perfect on the Syfy channel, and would actually have a very good chance at even more than a 2nd season if it moves to the Syfy channel!!

It’s right there in black and white. I don’t understand it. They don’t give Shows aa chance anymore. Look at 90210. It was a flop in the beginning until it found its audience. Today, it never would’ve had a chance!

I never really watched Fox and now I remember why…. After tonight’s episode I won’t watch Fox any more!! I was already looking forward to next season. I don’t understand why they wouldn’t continue Wayward Pines… I rush home from work and usually have something quick and easy for dinner so that I don’t miss any of the show…. Now after tonight it is gone…. WOW really??? I love this show and I think Fox is making a huge mistake by not carrying it on!!!! The FINALE IS ONLY 1 HOUR LONG AND I HAVE NEVER SEEN SO MANY COMMERCIALS DURING A SHOWS AS I HAVE DURING THIS ONE, SO HOW IS THAT ENOUGH TIME TO SHOW A DECENT ENDING???? I AM SO FRUSTRATED OVER THIS!!!!! I have boycotted Nascar and that really was the only reason I had ever watched fox before. I see Empire is coming back for a 2nd season (of Course)….. what ever you absolutely and seriously SUCK Fox Network!!!!!!!! So very disappointed!!!!!

Da%# another Good show canceled after the first season why even bother. I think we just skip all season 1 shows and wait to see if they pick it up for season 2 and then just binge watch. I hate getting hooked on something and then have them pull the plug. AAAGGHH!!!!. There are too many shows that have been arounf far far too long pull them. We want something new and different. This was it. Sy Fi now is your chance.

What!!! I am Shocked. I was sure they would continue the series. EVERYTHING you can ask for a tv show to continue was there!!! There had to be a huge fan base, almost everyone I knew watched it. Specially when the commercial ran on tv every time Empire was on. I couldn’t wait to see when “Wayward Pines” would pick up another season I wanted to know more about the creatures, more about the people’s lives. More about the mad scientist mind and the why of it all, Loved the actors. But the people are right. I am starting to watch shows that made it to season two with a hope for more seasons to come. Eventually new shows won’t be watched, then what are tv stations going to do with binge watching becoming popular. This cancellation hit the gut pretty bad, for many fans. For the cancellation crew sorry but you’re the ones that also lost.
