Is the Walking Dead running out of story? Cancelled sooner than we think?
Not according to the show’s producers, who say the AMC series wont do a Game Of Thrones and outpace its source material.
Showrunner Scott M. Gimple assures THR that the TV series is not gaining too much ground on the comics:
“With some plans we have for the future, I don’t think [the show is poised to outstrip the comics]. I think it’s unlikely, but it depends where the book stops.”
With at least 250 issues of the comics reportedly planned (166 have been released to date), there’s no sign of the book stopping any time soon. What’s more, writer/EP Robert Kirkman says the show will gain more survival rope by expanding storylines where necessary:
“I don’t know if anyone sat down to do the math, but if the show is gaining on the comic book, it’s at a very slow pace. We’re expanding storylines so every now and then we zip through the comic book, and then we slow down for a while and add a bunch of stuff that’s not in the comics. There’s not any danger of that happening in any way.”
As for how many seasons it will take the TV show catch up with the book, and perhaps finally face mortality? EP David Alpert estimates another 12 seasons:
“When we get to season 20, then I think we’ll be caught up. And at that point, we’ll have to have Robert really pick up the pace [with the comics].”
The Walking Dead SEASON 20? Could it go even further? Will it end on its own terms or somehow contrive to be cancelled? What does the apocalypse hold? Stay tuned…
