Underground‘s hopes of finding a new home following cancellation at WGN America have taken a final blow. With BET already passing on the drama, Oprah Winfrey has officially confirmed that OWN will not be saving the series due to its high cost, per Refinery29:
“I can’t afford Underground. It cost twice as much to make as Queen Sugar. As a matter of fact, my dear friend John Legend called me personally and asked me about it, but we’d already been talking about how we could make it work […] it’s like $5 million an episode, so we can’t afford it. It’s not cheap, I think because it’s a period piece.”
In addition to the price, Winfrey noted that while the show was often trending on Twitter, the numbers just didn’t add up:
“We really tried to make it work. I wanted to make it work because I think it’s a good show. I wanted to be able to save that show, but it did not make good business sense for me.”
Will you miss Underground?

It’s sad because it was really a good show. Hopefully, Oprah can reconsider and find a way to trim the budget.

I am so sorry Underground will not be back. It really had great acting and the storyline kept me waiting for the next episode. What a shame. Underground will be missed.

I just found Underground on HULU I never binge watch anything but I did this time. Had I known it would end leaving me hanging the way it did, I never would have started watching it. I wish Netflix would pick it up but its 2020 now so guess no one is going to pick it up. I think it is terrible to do an audience like that OMG!!!
Minnie Moore says
I am so sorry we will not see a another season of “Underground” great acting and educational.
Maybe some of our black Billionaires will get together and finance the project.
Cheri Lewis says
I agree! I am binge watching it now and I think it is brilliant and worth the money.

An excellent show that should be continued. The writing was great and consistent with the history whose details it developed through the poetry of individual and collective lives. And personally, it inspired rich conversations with my sons and daughters. Could a consortium revive it?
