Will Timeless have time on its side?
Series creator Eric Kripke has confirmed that the sci-fi drama has an initial 13-episode order from NBC, though he’s “hoping” for a full 22-episode pick-up en route to a Season 2 renewal, per Collider:
NBC want to have a sense that they know where [the story] is going, where the characters go and what the mythology [is], but more than that it’s just important that they know there’s a good story engine and you can get lots of different types of stories.
In Timeless, every week [the characters] go to a different iconic point in history. [..] As long as there are historical periods, there will be episodes.
“We’re getting set up for 13 [episodes] and there we’re hoping for 22 [episodes].
On the format of the series, Kripke confirmed Timeless will adopt the serial-procedural model:
It is hard to tell purely serialized storytelling, but if you have an element that when you’re in the writer’s room each week you have an element [that] you can start with, like in Supernatural a ghost story or in Timeless [an historical period], it really helps you define what that week’s story should be.
So when you’re doing network TV, serialization is important but it’s also good to know what your self-enclosed story is and Timeless really provides that.”
Will Timeless escape the reaper for a full season pick-up and then renewal? Stay tuned as we monitor the status of Timeless Season 2…
