The ‘Bastard Executioner’ has himself been executed by the Cancellation Reaper.
FX has cancelled The Bastard Executioner after one season.
The cabler has opted not to move forward with Season 2 due to low ratings, per creator Kurt Sutter:
“The numbers just didn’t sustain the cost of the show, quite frankly. It’s all math at the end of the day. We couldn’t establish that core audience that allows you to figure out your advertising paradigm and whether or not the show is affordable.”
He added:
“I have been awed by the talent and commitment of this TBX cast and crew. The audience has spoken and unfortunately the word is, ‘meh.’ So with due respect, we bring our mythology to an epic and fiery close.”
“I love this cast and crew so much. They’re primarily British actors. They have a different mentality about the work. They’re not plugged into the numbers or worried about ‘Do I have a job?’ They’re so used to be journeymen. They were there to do the work. By the finale the whole cast and crew had bonded and everyone was so excited about this show and the mythology. And by that time I already knew it wasn’t coming back. It was heartbreaking for me.”
RIP.

I don’t watch much tv but I did thoroughly enjoy The Bastard Executioner. I figured it was cancelled after Sutter character got killed off. To bad well written shows don’t make it and trashy shows do.

I watched a few episodes and lost interest. It’s was just slow, moody, and unexciting. While the writing and talent were good… the story was just not very entertaining fro a weekly drama. There wasn’t a lot of pull to “have to watch next week”. Unfortunately I think the very nature of commercial television did this in with viewers.

It was a show that made you think. You actually had to watch it and listen to what they said. It wasn’t one of those mindless craps shows that most stations air.

it was a good show and to be honest i did not see this having the lifespan of Sons of Anarchy but it should of at least got a second season i really enjoyed
Mary Rey says
My heart is sooooooooooooooo broken. I would love to see another network pick it up.
Niles says
It’s pretty sad when the creator and writer of the show doesn’t have confidence in his own work. He really didn’t give this show a chance. It doesn’t matter if another network would pick it up because Sutter gave up on his own creation.

I’m really disappointed that this show was cancelled. It was deep, complex, and very subtle in many ways. Loved the characters of Wilkin and Lady Love, Annora, and the Machiavellian villainy that was Corbett. I suspect that the blood and guts that each episode showed was pretty much the way it was in the time before Laws and individual rights was born. People lived and died at the whims of others more powerful.
If anything, beyond the significant entertainment of the story line, the show should make you appreciate the laws and social structures we have In the civilized world. Honor and other knightly characteristics had to be chosen, fought for, and survived.
The Bastard Executioner was an excellent show and I mourn its passing.

I enjoyed the show, but Katey’s accent was so annoying. I can’t think of who from the SoA cast would be a better actress for that part, but that accent was like nails on a chaulk board every time she spoke.
As soon as I saw Ed Sheeran, I knew things were going to go downhill. That guy can’t act himself out of a wet paper bag.

Another show I enjoyed very much, bits the dust…If TV keeps this up I will have no problem finding at least 12 hours to sleep nightly…

Katey was definitely mis-cast in this, almost to the point of being painful to watch. The show was slow and I wasn’t surprised it wasn’t renewed for a 2nd season. That said, we did enjoy the show and would have continued to watch. I do hope it was cancelled for the ratings reason and not because where the story line was going might piss off the church.

We each have our opinions but just to let Katey be reassured after reading your comment i think she was very good in her role as Lenora. I liked her accent too. We are all blessed with different perceptions, likes and dislikes.

STUPID BASTARDS !!! But it this day and age I guess more people like mindless shows instead of good honest shows.
Julie says
Amen to that. They should have given it one more season to get more people aware it was even out there instead of worrying about ratings. That’s all Americans think about is their pocket book! it was an excellent show, well written and much better than SOA in my opinion, and I wanted to see the relationship between Willum and Love grow.
Chikki says
Loved the show…the cast was GREAT so sad to see it end.
Julie says
I’m totally bummed!
Elaine C says
Loved the show hope it gets picked up by another network very entertaining
Yolanda Romero says
OMG no no…… I really loved the show…and the characters wow there are no words I will really really miss it but Fox should end it properly with a two hours ending. for us who watch it faithfully
Julie says
I have always liked fox but they are stupid stupid stupid! We have almost nothing but garbage on TV! I rarely watch it. But I saw a preview for this and it looked interesting so I gave it a try. Absolutely loved it and never missed an episode. Never even occurred to me they would be idiots and cancel it. What a bunch of morons. Is there any network out there with some b…. who would pick it up and give it a second season? I think you’d be surprised at the ratings as more people discover it. With the Last Kingdom getting such good reviews and ratings i really believe people who like historical fiction are going to want more and would be willing to try the Executioner if they knew it was even out there! That’s what I did. I rarely saw any advertising for it, one time. I’d be willing to plaster it on my facebook etc. It’s hard to get good ratings when people don’t even know it exists.
Bunkie McBride says
I enjoyed the show and would have watched season 2.
Bill Harding says
Well Written, Good cast, Highly entertaining, Will be missed….
Luke says
The Bastard Executioner was an overall good show that should have continued. Poor decision FX, way to fuck it up.

I don’t watch TV dramas any more as I now wait for the series to end. If a series is cancelled and has an ending then I will watch it. I will not waste my time watching a series just to have it cancelled without an ending. not after the Borgia’s, 3 seasons with no ending. that’s about a day wasted watching that show. If (The Bastard Executioner) has an ending,or what you can call an ending, then I will watch this drama as I like period dramas and this one looks good.
