Star Trek will roll out weekly on CBS’ All Access streaming platform, rather than the all-at-once model popularized by Netflix and other streaming outlets.
CBS chief Les Moonves confirmed the anti-binge-release strategy in an earnings report:
[Star Trek] will be episodic, week by week. It won’t be the Netflix [way].
The weekly release model is aimed at locking viewers into the All Access service for the long-haul, though the lack of binge-ability may present an obstacle to viewers used to the all-you-can-consume Netflix format.
However, Moonves foresees only success for the series, and in turn the service, with a second season already mooted:
We have one of the best creative teams behind this show, and we’re confident that its large, passionate fan base will lead to substantial, profitable subscriber growth.
Stay tuned to see whether Star Trek can indeed beam up a second season and beyond…
