With a fourth season coming in 2016, Sherlock doesn’t yet have an official end date, but it does have a “built-in mortality,” according to showrunner Steven Moffat.
Speaking to Variety, Moffat underlined that (in contrast to Doctor Who) the show’s lifespan hinges on the appetite and schedule of its lead actor, Benedict Cumberbatch:
Once Benedict Cumberbatch gives up Sherlock, what are we going to do? We are going to stop, that’s what we are going to do.
