Why is Portlandia ending?
Co-creator/star Fred Armisen admits the fear of cancellation softened the decision with fellow creator Carrie Browstein to end the show with Season 8, therefore maintaining a sense of control over the series, per THR:
“We wanted to end the show while we all loved doing it and we had good feelings about it. It just seemed like the right time. And also eight season is a lot. It’s a lifetime, it really is. So it was a very organic decision.”
Despite having time to plot the ending, Brownstein notes that the comedy wont be neatly wrapped up in a bow:
“One of the freedoms that comes from making sketches people aren’t looking for everyone to get pregnant or die or go off into space or something. We were able to avoid sentimentality a little bit. There were a couple of character that we were interested in a kind of suggestion of finality or closure, but I don’t think that’s what we led with in the writing process.”
The 8th and final season of Portlandia premieres Jan. 18, 2018 on IFC.
