Peep Show has failed to resurface in the US, but star David Mitchell insists a Stateside version of the popular UK comedy “could work” – so long as it retained the spirit of the original – per DS:
“I don’t know what happened with this last one, but I think some of the previous attempts fell down because the reasons for trying to do it weren’t sound.
It was soon after The Office had been successful there, so having bought the rights to a successful British sitcom looked like a respectful thing to do if you were in development. So they did that, but they didn’t do it in the sincere spirit of actually wanting to transfer the show.”
Expanding on what a US version of Peep Show would need to be successful, he added:
“It’s about keeping the right things and not keeping the wrong things. I wouldn’t keep the dialogue or the references, just some of the broad storylines, the way it’s filmed, the relationship between the two characters… and then basically write something new on that basis. I think it could work very well, if they had good writers.”
