Yahoo has cancelled Other Space after one season, according to comments emanating from a recent earnings call.
The streaming company has ‘written off’ a second of the sci-fi comedy after failing to make enough money from the series.
Yahoo Chief Financial Officer Ken Goldman said its original video series including Other Space were the cause of a write-down of $42 million in the company’s third quarter, per TheWrap:
“We thought long and hard about it. What we concluded is certain of our original video content, we couldn’t see a way to make money over time. I’m thinking of Community, I’m thinking of Sin City Saints and so forth.
Community has already been cancelled (for a second time) for a while, though insiders claim a movie continuation is still possible.
Goldman confirms Other Space‘ cancellation by stating that the company has written the show off and “decided to move on”:
“So there, where we had spent money and had some assets on our balance sheet, we elected to write those off. That actually helps us going forward and we won’t have the expense to impact us going forward.
In thinking through that, we thought of not only what is the cost, but what is the cost to market and create the streams you need to make them successful. So we’re not saying we’re not going to do these at all in the future, but what we’re saying is in three cases, at least, it didn’t work we had hoped it would work, and we decided to move on.”
It’s currently unclear whether the show, a Yahoo original series, could be shopped elsewhere.
RIP.

I hope another network or maybe even Netflix can pick this show up!
I was really looking forward to Season 2.
This show is hilarious
I believe there just wasn’t enough exposure to the public about this show, otherwise it would have taken off like a summer wildfire in California.

I agree. It was hilarious, but when I told people about it, they had difficulty getting to it and/or streaming it. Even downloading the Yahoo Screen app was hard to navigate on ROKU and Xbox. I don’t think the failure was in Other Space, rather in the medium it was streamed. A better, more user-friendly interface, better utilization of their ad space and it might have been a hit.

I still think about this show. Netflix needs to revive this hilarious show, I need these characters back!

Who the hell even knew Yahoo had this series? I didn’t know until it was already dead, but I loved the one season we got.
