CBBC’S Operation Ouch! returns for a new series with Hospital Takeover at Alder Hey
Drs Chris and Xand van Tulleken join forces once again as the Bafta award-winning medical show Operation Ouch! returns for a fifth series, venturing behind the scenes at Alder Hey to reveal the incredible work that goes on at one of Europe’s largest children’s hospitals.
The new series remains jam-packed with incredible facts about the human body and lots of experimenting and exploration through the fascinating world of medicine. There will also be more medical mysteries answered as Chris and Xand (pictured left and right) go ‘Ouch and About’ in and around the hospital, trying to answer tricky questions from inquisitive kids.Filming at Alder Hey will also bring the Operation Ouch! experience to the kids being treated there. Chris and Xand will follow the journeys of children in the hospital’s many different departments as they undergo their treatment; find out exactly what doctors and nurses have to do to fix their patients and how incredible technology is transforming children’s medicine.
This new ten-part series will also have lots of new elements, as Chris and Xand look at the departments hidden behind the scenes that patients rarely see – from what it takes to keep everyone fed and watered, to who cleans up the operating theatre after hours and who answers 999 calls.
Operation Ouch! takes over at an exciting time as Alder Hey moved into a brand new state-of-the-art hospital last year. With the busiest A&E department in Europe treating a quarter of a million children a year, Chris and Xand are sure to come across a range of incredible stories, some eye-opening medical facts and lots of non-stop action.
Xand says: “Even after years of practising medicine, we still learn loads of incredible facts ourselves when filming Operation Ouch! It’s going to be fascinating to see behind the scenes of such a world-class hospital and to hear some of the inspiring stories of the patients there.”
The new series, which airs on CBBC in the autumn, will also visit a number other hospitals during the series to explore their work and discover more mesmerising medical stories from around the UK.
Rick Turnock, Medical Director at Alder Hey, says: “We are thrilled to welcome Operation Ouch! back to Alder Hey, this time for Hospital Takeover. Operation Ouch! and CBBC have become part of the Alder Hey family over the last few years and many of our patients and staff are huge fans of the show.
“The series is a fantastic opportunity for Alder Hey to help educate children about health conditions, medicine and treatments, while also hopefully reducing some of the anxiety they may have about coming into hospital.
“After recently moving to our new hospital last October, we are looking forward to showing Chris, Xand and all the Operation Ouch! fans around our new home.”
Operation Ouch! is a Maverick Production for CBBC. The series has been commissioned Cheryl Taylor, Controller CBBC. The Executive Producer for CBBC is Kez Margrie, the Series Producer for Maverick is Romily Menzies and the Executive Producer for Maverick is Ian Holt.
