Neighbours cancelled? The Australian soap has aired in the UK for 31 years, but its survival is in” jeopardy” as Channel 5 and producers Freemantle Media have hit a brick wall in deal renegotiations.
A source informed The Sunday People:
“The renegotiation of the Neighbours Channel 5 deal has become very fraught and is in jeopardy. Channel 5 really want to keep the show.
But the failure to reach a deal is being blamed on Channel 5’s new American owners Viacom for refusing to sign off on the figures and not understanding the cultural importance of the show in the UK.
Neighbours has become a British TV favorite and it would be a sad day if it were to go.”
In a bid to ease fears that the long-running soap is not going to be axed from UK screens, a spokesperson from Freemantle Media told TV Week:
“We do not comment on commercial matters. That said, Neighbours is a fantastic show, with a legion of loyal fans around the world. We enjoy a great working relationship with our broadcast partners and already have some exciting story plans for next year.”
Stay tuned as we continue to monitor the cancel/renew status of Neighbours….
