Major Crimes series creator James Duff maintains that the current fourth season is not being viewed as the last in the series.
TNT extended Season 4 to an unprecedented 23 episodes in August, leaving fans excited but also apprehensive at the prospect of the show ending.
However, speaking to TVLine, Duff disputes the cancellation conspiracy theories:
“That’s not at all the case. [I suspect TNT is] “looking to have some original content on the air in February, and they had not much to choose from at the time.”
Even so, with TNT yet to renew Major Crimes for Season 5, there’s always a chance the axe will swing.
However, Duff is optimistic the value to the cabler will be backed up by a fifth season renewal:
“TNT has made no secret of its desire to move to edgier fare,” he acknowledges. “But I think they also want to do that without losing the audience they already have.”
“Cable makes its money not by demos, but by subscribers,” Duff says. “So we’re valuable to TNT in that sense.”
