Game Of Thrones will be renewed for Season 8, HBO president Michael Lombardo has confirmed.
Lombardo also intimated that, as it stands, Season 8 will be the last in the series, per showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss, though he’s hoping to carry the series into Season 9, and has an open mind about a Game Of Thrones prequel series, per THR:
He added that showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss are “feeling like there’s two more years after six. I would always love for them to change their minds. That’s what we’re looking at right now.”
The series wrapped season five in June, with season six currently in production.
Lombardo also addressed speculation that a prequel could be in a possibility.
“I would aloud be open to anything Dan and David want to do,” Lombardo said. “It really would depend fully on what they want to do. I think you’re right, there’s enormous storytelling to be mined in a prequel. We haven’t had any conversations.”
Lombardo says that Weiss and Benioff are thinking two seasons beyond Season 6 on “Game of Thrones.” For now. #TCA15
