ABC hasn’t quite let sleeping dogs lie. Network chief Channing Dungey has defended the cancellation of Downward Dog Season 2.
Speaking to the press, Dungey said the show’s demise was a financial decision, per Post-Gazette:
“There are always parts of this job that are creatively heartbreaking. We very much wanted to do a second season of Downward Dog. We engaged in a series of conversations and ultimately we were not able to make it work financially, which is disappointing because it’s a show that I would have loved to have an opportunity to bring back.”
Despite hopes for a limited run second season, Dungey added:
“We didn’t have the ratings to justify doing a full 13 and we just weren’t able to get there.
On whether Downward Dog could have survived if it had been given the Tuesday time-slot after Fresh Off the Boat, she said:
“I think we made the best choices based on the information we had at the time. You can Monday morning quarterback anything. What does bum me out is I think they had some great ideas for season two and I really love those producers and that cast.”
Are you upset with the cancellation of Downward Dog Season 2?

yes

So am I- I really liked that show.
Robin says
You bet I am – so upset that I will not watch ANYTHING on ABC – not even Kiefer Sutherland (the only reason I watched Designated Survivor anyway) or the promise of seeing Freddie Highmore. ABC would rather in invest in the Gong Show- what a joke.. I don’t pay for any streaming service but I will for Downward Dog. Let’s find it a new home!

I am not the only one in my group of friends and family who absolutely LOVED Downward Dog, was looking forward to the second season, and is shocked there will not more episodes of Nan and Martin. Someone is making a HUGE mistake!

Dearest Channing Dungey,, (The orginal LATIN word of DUNG reminds me of people like you)
ALL about money, ratings, and chit..
Not enough swearing/violence to boost ABC ratings/shareholders satisfaction?
Well my dear, I am a trained armed Police Officer, and even I & my collegues and their families, enjoyed this series..
YOU Channing Dungey, are obviously trying to make a name for yourself with ABC..
+ You must be a lonely person without close family or children****
SHAME on you!!!
Ladybbird says
Just to add, ABC’s dropping of ratings will only increase when they employ peope like you…
Linda says
Downward Dog was only the third sitcom I have loved/watched in many years. Trophy Wife was canceled also. At least Life in Pieces has been renewed. Downward Dog is a gem!!!
Peggy says
Downward Dog is such a great feel-good show that so many people can relate to on different levels. Meanwhile, Blackish is still on- a vicious mean self-serving bunch of garbage; I refuse to watch it.
Jackie says
I loved this show and like others I would much rather have season 2 than the Gong Show and the other game shows they seem to favor.

So, if you can’t financially justify 13 shows, do 10. There isn’t much on network TV that’s positive, uplifting and genuinely different. This show was one of the rare exceptions. Try giving DD a chance to breathe and grow….relocate it in your schedule…you might be surprised at what happens. One thing I can tell you for sure. This was the only network show I watched. If you wonder why your business model is tanking…look no further.
Jane Shibilski says
Downward Dog was the best show on ABC. So many people, of all age groups, loved that show. It’s not too late. Bring it back!! You stated you loved the show and wished the ratings would justify a second season. Well, do you think that is what CBS said when faced with disappointing ratings in the first season of “The Big Bang Theory”? They knew they had a gem of a show and stuck with it. You never gave Nan and Martin that chance.

I loved this show. Let’s home another network takes it up

Netflix…Hulu…pick up DD. The series would do well for either of you. ABC suits are/were mistaken with this heartfelt series which was NEVER given a chance. ♐

I loved Downward Dog and was very disappointed to see that ABC cancelled it. Get rid of some of your game and reality shows, they would not be missed. You never gave this show a chance to find its audience. BTW, I’m so sick of seeing Steve Harvey on so many stations/shows. He’s annoying, yet one can’t turn a TV on without seeing him. That’s what I call overkill. Downward Dog was entertaining…Steve Harvey is not!
