The BBC has lauded the Series 2 ratings, while describing the drama as a “complete five episode series,” suggesting the show may have run its course:

The irrepressible Doctor Foster proved irresistible to viewers with even more watching the second series than the first, and it’s still growing on BBC iPlayer
Series two of Doctor Foster had an average of 8.9 million viewers, with a 35 percent share, consolidated figures reveal. This is higher than series one which had a consolidated average of 8.2 million, with a 31 percent share.
The finale of the second series of the hit BBC One show has been watched by a series high of 9.8 million viewers, with a 40 percent share.
BBC iPlayer figures also reflect the popularity of the award-winning drama, with September stats revealing that Doctor Foster was the most requested show of the month, with over nine million requests.
Written by Mike Bartlett and made by Drama Republic, the dramatic series climax saw Gemma and Simon realise too late the devastating effect their toxic behaviour had on those around them, resulting in their troubled son Tom leaving his whole life behind and fleeing.
Charlotte Moore, BBC Director of Content, says: “The irrepressible Doctor Foster proved irresistible to viewers with even more watching the second series than the first, and it’s still growing on BBC iPlayer. I’m very proud to have one of the most talked about dramas of the year on BBC One. It’s an absolute joy to work with Mike Bartlett, the incredible cast and Drama Republic and to provide them with a home to showcase their very best work.”
Roanna Benn and Jude Liknaitzky Executive Producers for Drama Republic, say: “We are so happy that audiences have embraced Doctor Foster and thrown themselves into Gemma’s journey in series two. Audiences have shown that they are up for big and challenging stories, and it is testament to Mike’s bravery and skill as a writer, and Suranne’s absolutely captivating performance, that people have come in such numbers.”
The complete five episode series is available on BBC iPlayer.
Doctor Foster writer Mike Bartlett recently suggested the show’s future was in limbo.
