Is Beyond already doomed?
Freeform will give the sci-fi drama the binge treatment, releasing all 10 episodes of the show’s first season online at once in line with its January 2 linear premiere. Per THR:
The younger-skewing cable network will launch the series on the linear network on Monday, Jan. 2 at 9 p.m., with all 10 episodes debuting at the same time online in a binge model.
All 10 episodes will be available on multiple digital platforms, including the Freeform app, Freeform.com, On Demand and Hulu. The digital rollout — which mirrors the Netflix binge model — marks a first for Freeform.
“The premiere of Beyond marks an important milestone in the history of Freeform, nearly a year since our rebrand,” Freeform president Tom Ascheim said. “One of the promises we made to our audience at the time was to create content they love and to make that content easily accessible. Beyond helps us live up to both promises. In the same way we modernized our brand, we are modernizing how we bring our shows to our audience. Beyond is our first, and definitely not our last, ‘binge-from-the-start’ show.”
Attempts to ‘mimic’ the Netflix binge-model can be looked at both ways – indicating a lack of confidence in a series that is essentially being burned off or eased into the cancellation graveyard (NBC’s Aquarius) — or, giving it a better chance to succeed by reflecting the show’s format/demographics through a digital release.
Either way, its new territory for Freeform.
